What running shoe would you recommend for racing?

Unbiased Runner Recommends ASICS METASPEED Sky for Racing

Oh, this is a good question. So I'm currently in the process of trialing out new running shoes as well. I'm not sponsored. So I can give an unbiased opinion on this. I really like the ASICS METASPEED Sky. I've only just started running in them. So I haven't actually done a long run in them. And actually, yesterday, I did the London marathon. And it's quite funny. At 4:00 in the morning, I was running around my kitchen, changing between the Nike's and the ASICS. I would have picked the ASICS, but I was nervous to use them because I hadn't done a long run in them. So I actually used the Alphafly. But I'm probably leaning towards ASICS being my favorite shoe at the moment.

I'm testing out new running shoes, and my favorite at the moment is the ASICS METASPEED Sky.

I recommend the ASICS METASPEED Sky as a racing shoe. While I am currently in the process of trying out new running shoes and not sponsored, I can provide an unbiased opinion. Although I haven't done a long run in them yet, I have started running in the ASICS METASPEED Sky and have been impressed with their performance. I recently had a choice between the Nike's and the ASICS for the London marathon, and although I was leaning towards the ASICS, I ultimately went with the Alphafly due to my lack of long run experience in the ASICS. However, based on my current experience, I am inclined to say that the ASICS METASPEED Sky is my favorite racing shoe at the moment.

Hey Sam. Yeah, the story, you're referring to was the start of the 2015, Ironman World Championships. We was down there swimming doing our warm up at the pier, just before the start. Mike Riley cause everyone back and we're waiting for the cannon to go off and then you just turn around and looked at me and you was like, you ain't going to swim a my feet, get away from me. And I just remember thinking to myself. Wow. Okay. This guy must be an absolute animal. Swimmer because he's super confident. And yes, I thought. Okay. I'm going to try and position myself right next to this guy because if he's that confident, he's obviously going to be fast and the other Cannon went off. And I don't know exactly what happened. But I just remember, pretty much swimming on top of you and then over you and then looking back thinking. Okay. Well, he's gone CS that's what went down there. But actually interestingly, that was the last time I think we raced and I finished fifth that day in my age group and you finished sixth. So it's amazing actually, how much you've improved since then. It is actually incredible to think that you were sick for in your age group back. Then with me in front of you and now you're up there in the top five in the world with your PTO rankings. It's incredible and hats off to you for all that you've achieved. But interestingly, do you remember the guy? This is a question back to you. Do you remember the guy who won our age group do? Remember how amazing he was? I think he was pretty much top 15 in the world, including the pro men and he was only an 18 to 24 year old age group.

Hey, Sam! The story you're referring to takes us back to the start of the 2015 Ironman World Championships in Kona. We were both racing as Age Groupers. Then the cannon went off, and things got a bit chaotic. I don't recall the exact details, but I remember swimming on top of you and then over you. I looked back and thought, Okay, he's gone. That's how it played out in the water. Interestingly, that was the last time we raced together. I finished fifth in my age group that day, and you finished sixth. It's amazing to see how much you've improved since then. From being behind me in that race to now being in the top five in the world with your PTO rankings, it's truly incredible. I applaud you for all that you've achieved.

How do you balance your life between marriage and sport?

Finding Balance: Juggling Marriage and Sport through Role-playing

I feel like this is a question that is. Still developing haven't haven't got the exact answer that, maybe some people will be looking for, but we are very good at almost role playing but in real life, so I will speak to Lucy as coach and she will listen as athlete and it's not so much like I'm coached. She's athlete. She has to listen. We're like bouncing off of each other, but at the same time, I can we both can very much then. Switch off. Forget about that. We can be talking about trifle on one minute. And then the next minute, we'll be talking about, you know, whatever's on the TV or what's for dinner. So we just been very, very lucky in that. We've been doing this relationship in a, in this way, since we first met. So even when we were back, you know, young swimmers, I was studying sports science at University and one of the things I was really attracted to Lucy was that's just pure dedication towards her Sport and I felt like as a scientist or you know, studying science. I could almost help her achieve her goals in the pool as well because of the knowledge that I was gaining. And seeing some of the mistakes that she was making that, at the time, the coach wasn't picking up on like obvious. Things like nutrition and just Essence. See in the gym wasn't been done. All these little things. I was like I can help with that. So yeah, so from day one, I've been lending advice and and, you know, sort of coaching Lucy towards being the best athlete. She can be and also being your her partner as well. So yeah, we've got a healthy balance there.

We have a balanced relationship where I can help Lucy with her sport in terms of nutrition, exercise, and knowledge that I've gained while studying sports science. We are also partners and able to talk about anything else like trifle or what's on TV.

Balancing my life between marriage and sport is still a work in progress, and I don't have a definitive answer that everyone may be looking for. However, we have found a way to navigate this dynamic by almost role-playing in real life. I take on the role of Lucy's coach, and she listens as the athlete. We bounce ideas off each other, but we can also switch off and focus on other aspects of our lives.

We've been fortunate to have established this relationship dynamic since we first met. Even when we were young swimmers, I was studying sports science at university, and I was attracted to Lucy's dedication to her sport. I felt that my knowledge in science could help her achieve her goals in the pool. I noticed certain mistakes that the coach at the time wasn't addressing, such as nutrition and essential aspects of training. I offered my advice and started coaching Lucy to be the best athlete she could be while also being her partner.

We've been able to strike a healthy balance between our marriage and our involvement in sports. We can discuss training and performance, but we can also switch gears and talk about everyday things like what's on TV or what's for dinner. It's a dynamic that has worked well for us, and we feel fortunate to have found this balance.

What role do you play in Lucy’s career?

Multifaceted Support: Husband, Coach, and Decision-Maker in Lucy's Career

So I have several roles. I would say loose his career. First and foremost. I'm husband. So I am a shoulder to lean on whenever there's problems. And I'm also probably the person that she would confound it in asking me what I would do, if I was her. But yeah, I'm also I've been coach for Lucy for the last 67 years. More recently. We've taken on another another coach in Danny meringue to help with that. But yeah, I'm basically the person that makes most of the decisions about where and where, where, and when we should race, the logistics behind certain races, how she should approach her training in terms of what phase you should be in. When and and most importantly, I'm the person that Almost stops her from overtraining, especially coming from a swimming background. We both have a tendency to more is always better and that was drilled into us from a young age, as swimmers. And, and that approach just doesn't work with Triathlon. You have to be much more sensible scientific in your That more isn't always better, especially when it comes to running. So I'm the person that will tell her you're doing too much and also at the same time tell her you're not doing enough to achieve the goals you want. So yeah, I'm lots of different roles at different times.

As a coach for Lucy for the last 67 years, I'm the person that makes most of the decisions about where and when to race, how she should approach her training, and when to stop her from overtraining.

In Lucy's career, I play several roles. First and foremost, I am her husband, providing a shoulder to lean on and someone she can confide in. I also serve as her coach, a role I have taken on for the past 6-7 years. More recently, we have brought on another coach, Danny Meringue, to assist with her training.

As her coach, I make decisions regarding race selection, logistics, and training approaches. I ensure she is in the appropriate training phase and prevent her from overtraining, which is a common tendency for both of us coming from a swimming background. We were taught that more is always better, but in triathlon, a more sensible and scientific approach is required. I guide her in understanding that more is not always better, especially when it comes to running. I provide the balance of telling her when she is doing too much and when she may need to push harder to achieve her goals.

Overall, I fulfill various roles at different times in Lucy's career, supporting her both personally and professionally.

Spur-of-the-moment decision led to life-changing Triathlon journey

So I started Triathlon back in 2014. It was a spur-of-the-moment, don't even know what to call it. We was in a hotel room in Scotland with both just swam the great. Scottish Swim open, water race and both had a particularly bad race and can't really say what happened and why. But I just found myself signing. Myself up to Iron Man, U K. Which at the time I had I didn't own a road bike didn't owner. I had owned a mountain bike, but I didn't own a road bike. I'd never done anything more than a tool. Freak a run. And yeah, I'd heard about an Ironman from my mate who just done one who used to be a swimmer and just full. Yeah. Why not? Just just sign up. See what happens.

I signed up for my first triathlon in 2014 without any prior knowledge or experience. I had no road bike and had only ever done a few 5ks. I was inspired by a friend who had done an Ironman and decided to give it a shot.

I started with triathlon back in 2014 after a spontaneous decision. It happened while I was in a hotel room in Scotland with a friend.
