How should young coaches effectively reach out to established coaches to find mentors?

Establishing mentor relationships key for young coaches

I think young coaches should just reach out to the people that they think or believe have been successful, and try to ask them questions, and try to develop a relationship with them. And then eventually, ask that person to be your mentor, and see what they say. But keep in mind, you have to be willing to listen. You have to be willing to take positive feedback and criticism. And you can go a long way. I think a mentor is absolutely necessary if you want to reach the top of your career or the top of your profession in your sport.

How do you measure the progress of the athletes you coach?

I measure my athletes progress by testing, we do a series of tests standing long jump. Three bound 5 and 10 bound and fly 30 and 45, second run. And then I trained to test myself then I to retest the athlete. I think it's better indicator of the coaching. And what I need to change to see if they did better from the first test second,

You also want to make sure that you have a planned workout or a planned and prepared way of training so you don't have to try to figure it out in between always have water available and something to keep you hydrated, but the environment is very important. If you're in a pleasant place that's peaceful you'll probably get a better workout.

Having a positive environment with good weather, planned workouts, and access to water will help any athlete get a better training session.

Well, we're recruiting in track and field here at University of Georgia. We want number one, great people with great character and integrity but hard work ethic. Of course, we have to have the fastest or the best jumpers or the most athletic, because that's our job. But the most important thing is, do they have good character? Will they be great teammates and can they help the team overall, if they work hard eventually, they'll end up on the podium.

Hi, the most def impressive athletic performance I've ever seen in person would probably be two of them Sydney McLaughlin of course, running 50 point in the 400 hurdles this year at Worlds and also Usain Bolt running 1919 in Berlin in 2009. That was amazing.

The most impressive athletic performances I've witnessed in person would have to be Sydney McLaughlin running 50 point in the 400 hurdles at Worlds this year, and Usain Bolt's incredible 19.19 run in Berlin back in 2009. Both of those moments were truly amazing.

Is caffeine bad for you or is it ok to drink a couple of cups of coffee every day?

Coffee in moderation: No need to worry!

I really don't think it's bad to have a couple of cups of coffee every day. I think no food is bad or good. I think, what has to happen is minimum. You have to minimize some of the things are not that are not optimal for a great performance. So a couple of cups a day, shouldn't hurt you, but you know, watch the sugar, watch the cream and go for it.

I don't believe that having a couple of cups of coffee every day is bad for you. I don't categorize food as inherently bad or good. However, it's important to minimize things that may not be optimal for peak performance. In the case of coffee, a couple of cups a day should not be harmful. Just be mindful of added sugar and cream, and enjoy your coffee.

Caryl Smith Gilbert was named Georgia's Director of Track and Field in 2021. She led the University of Southern California women to 2018 and 2021 NCAA outdoor team championships and was National Women's Coach of the Year both of those seasons. In two seasons at UGA, Smith Gilbert earned USTFCCCA South Region Coach of the Year, led the men to a record-setting NCAA Indoor Championships finish, and guided the women to a fifth-place finish at the 2023 NCAA Championships.
