Question is this cryotherapy help? Well, if you walk on it, any deck of international swimming competition, just like this. This is from behind the scenes of the major competition. Nearly every country comes with a cold tub, the debate is whether it works or not, I think not all. I know for a fact not all athletes, use it. There's certain athletes. That was swear by it.

Great question KO. Let me preface my answer by saying the same thing I would say about a lot of different modalities. Which is that regardless of what I say, or anyone else regardless even of what science says, if you use something and you feel like it helps you, you feel like it works. It works even if it's just the placebo effect. At the end of the day, we're all running and of one experiments on ourselves so whether that's With our diet, with our training, with our recovery with cryotherapy, we have to figure out what works for us. So all of that being said, my personal opinion about cryotherapy is that for most people in most situations. It's probably a waste of time. It's generally pretty expensive. Pretty hard to get access to and its benefits. Generally are not much different than a cold. So, I'll give you an example. I worked in a facility that had open access to a cryotherapy chamber. The players could use it whenever they wanted and I never saw anyone use it. Ever guys would go to the cold tub. None of them ever went to the cryotherapy chamber. So I would say certainly try it. See if it works for you, but you'll probably get most, if not all. Tall. If not more of the same benefits simply with a bag of ice and a bucket of water.

Cryotherapy can be anything from a localized ice pack. Let's say I'm on the back of your wrist, all the way up to cold tub, type experience, to even the cryotherapy Chambers. And what's interesting about cryotherapy is that the research isn't isn't really that great regarding all types of cryotherapy. We don't know if it helps with delayed onset muscle soreness, we don't know if it changes the inflammatory markers, there's thoughts that it might actually delay some of the Muscle Recovery, Us. But despite that people tend to love it, especially post performance or post event. And and what I recommend for people is if they have an acute injury, then they can put a local ice back on there. That's not really going to be deep enough. To change the temperature of the underlying surface and alter the inflammation but it will calm down the pain receptors. And then on the the opposite side which I love is more of the ice bath type therapy. And what that does is is it Taps into Into our autonomic nervous system. And so you dip yourself into a submerged cold exposure, exposure experience. Your sympathetic is naturally going to rise. So then you have to control the parasympathetic response and controlling that slowing down or spots is what Taps into the immune system. So it starts ramping up the immune system which is really important for injury and recovery and it also then helps play with the vascularity so vasoconstriction and vasodilation, Knowing that response. So despite despite what the research might say, on the different components of this, I am a big fan of doing ice baths, and that sort of stuff. Also from the, the mental will power standpoint of giving you power to have control over over the modality. Not as much. I'll tell people that they can use the ice pack after an injury but that has sort of fleeting benefits

Cryotherapy has a number of applications. I use it in my practice to treat warts for sports medicine purposes. I think it's a great modality. I use ice and Heat contrast baths to open and close the blood vessels for ankle, sprains neuropathy and other types of injuries as another sort of adjunct to this. The whole idea with ice baths that are become popular. I think they do do two things they do. Decrease inflammation. There has been some talk that they may also delay. Some of the muscle building components that you're trying to achieve with weight training and resistance training. So it's kind of a double-edged sword with that but obviously for acute inflammation I think cryotherapy is a great modality.

Hi, Keturah. Thank you for your question. What do you think about Cryotherapy?  I personally don't believe in cryotherapy. I believe more in hydrotherapy. Cryotherapy   just gets too cold, too quick and it can be detrimental to your muscle recovery because that blood flow basically slows down. Inter interstitial flow slows down. So you're not flushing those systems with the good nutrients that they need to get there because everything is kind of basically frozen and you need to defrost and then they have to kick back into gear. So, in a way, you're just prolonging that process of healing and recovering a little bit quicker than you'd like if you like cold tubs. I would suggest that that's going to be a little bit better because it doesn't get as cold and it's safe. You're not going to frost bite your feet. If you forget to put on the little um footy things for the cryotherapy and also hydrotherapy, there's an element of water that is naturally going to help the body recover because of its therapeutic properties. So I would say no cryo and yes to hydro

What do you think about cryotherapy? Well, for me, I think cryotherapy is a great tool to use for pain reduction, and so I think it's an excellent tool. Right now, I think there are a lot of negative complications with association with use of NSAIDs, and cryotherapy is a way of managing pain and hopefully getting people to then move, which is even more effective for pain, and using those two in combination for the reduction of pain and improving function, then the use of medication or NSAIDs, which have negative side effects.
