Customized Strength and Conditioning Program for Our Swim Team

Our strength and conditioning schedule at St. Bonaventure Swimming and Diving is very fluid. It's different per athlete. We have a great strength and conditioning team here and Austin, our strength coach for swimming and diving, has done a great job. He does a good job of specializing for our athletes. We do lift group-specific, so our distance swimmers lift separately from our mid-distance group and our sprint group. So, you know, it really depends on the athlete, depends on what group you're in, but Austin does a very good job of giving our athletes the individual work that they need based on the events that they're working on.

All of those things can be a great way to reach out to us and contact us about recruiting or expressing interest in our program or wanting to find more information about our program. What character traits are you most looking for in your swimmers?

Seeking swimmers with strong character traits and team spirit.

Character traits that we look for incoming athletes for our program are, from an athletic perspective, athletes that are motivated, work hard, like to race, like to compete, are excited about competing, are excited about coming to work every day. But outside of the competition side of things, we look for people that are respectful, that treat people well, that buy into the idea of team success, and that value team success. We don't want people who only buy into individual accomplishments, which are very important in an individual sport, but also to what we can accomplish together. It's a very important foundation of our program, and that's an important character trait that someone buys into.

How many swimmers do you recruit per year?

Recruiting Swimmers: Quality Over Quantity Drives Success

How many swimmers we recruit each year is really dependent on the circumstances. The easy metric would be we graduate so many seniors, we bring in so many freshmen. However, with the fifth year COVID year and our desire to improve and get better as a program, we don't look at it that black and white. So some years maybe more, some years maybe less. It's dependent on how many scholarships we have available. Ultimately what we're trying to do is bring in athletes that can help us be successful and help us compete for championships and be successful within the A10. So if we have to go over a certain number or if we're coming under a certain number, that's all okay. So we don't necessarily go in with a set number. We don't have a hard cap on how many people we can and can't bring in. So we don't really apply a number each year going into it.

Do the men and women of your swim team train together?

Our men and women do swim together. We train group specific, not gender specific here. We have a great dynamic here with our men and women training together. But yeah, they do train together throughout the season. There are occasional situations where we will split. You know, taper being the primary part where they are splitting, as our men and women do taper differently. So other than taper, for the most part, and some mid-season rest, our men and women do train together.

How do you select your swimmers for the conference championship?

How we select our swimmers for conference championships is very much based on a meritocracy. How many points can they score? How many points can we score as a team? Also factoring in diving. How many divers? How many roster spots are taken from there as well? Ultimately it's very much data driven as far as who we're taking to conference championships with the ultimate goal and scoring the most amount of points and being successful as a team. There are other things like relay considerations that will tip the scales in some respects, but ultimately it comes down to how many points can you score and that's the overall objective as a team is how many points can we as a team score.
