Matthew, born 15 weeks prematurely, is an international swim star with cerebral palsy and a vision impairment. He has survived 50+ operations and found the pool as part of his rehabilitation. He made his Paralympic debut in 2004 and won 5 medals at the 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships. At the 2012 and 2016 Paralympic Games, he won 1 gold, 1 silver, and 3 bronze medals. At Tokyo 2020, he won bronze in the men's 100m breaststroke SB6 and gold in the men's 4x100m freestyle 34 points relay. Outside the pool, he is a member of Paralympics Australia's Mob Leadership Team and World Para-swimming and Commonwealth Games Australia's Athlete Advisory Groups.
