The Importance of Aerobic Training for Sprint Swimmers

Haji on great question. How much aerobic training? Does it take to finish a 50 100 or 200 do that is a really, really powerful question. I think that the 50 and 100 are more closely connected maybe than the 200 and 100 especially as men go. Even to finish a 50 though. You have to have some type of aerobic base for the hundred as well. Personally, I practice usrpt, I do not swim the 200. So my my experience on this is limited. However, with my training Partners, we trained 50s and we train 25's. The goal is to make it to 20. Can you do 20 50s on the 2-minute? Maintaining your back-end speed and that being a tool to set the standard for your aerobic base. Also using in the water modalities such as Katsu, which is a blood accusation device. I've seen Caleb, you that I'm part of Team Speedo. So, I've seen Caleb, you did. I've seen Michael Andrew Michael Andrews lives by it. Kathu. It's really, really great tool to use in the water. Again. It cuts. It doesn't cut off it. It allows the legs or the arms to become engorged and blood. So you reach that lactic threshold, much faster. It starts to burn and hurt a whole lot sooner than it normally would. So, I'll put you right in the thick of Last 20 meters of any race. Those are my tips for you brother. Check out katsu Kaa, TSU Global. And again for Sprint. I'm a fan of usrpt. I think it's one of the best training kind of training regimes out there, especially when we talk about longevity, but all this would be remiss without saying you gotta spend more time than anything on your technical work. If you can Have a great heart, but you can have a great engine. The great engine and like a shit car is still a shit car. So make sure that you're working your Technique.

Taper Adjustments: Coach-Athlete Partnership Key to Success

Hey. This is a great question. I got a bit of a controversial answer for you. I saw some of the other responses, and I think all those are a bit controversial too. But I think they're spot on. The way that we look at swimming and training is really starting to change. Coaches are starting to realize that no matter how good of a program they write or create, it's not going to be perfect for every athlete in that program, in fact, it's only going to be a very select number of athletes whose body types and mental states are actually going to be aligned to have a lot of success in that program. So when we talk about taper, I think the main thing comes down to both the coach and the athlete taking responsibility for it. The coach has to take responsibility ultimately for engaging that athlete, even if they're a youth athlete as a kind of a partner-- understanding that as much knowledge as that Coach may have as a professional, that athlete has certain insights and knowledge about their own body that the coach could never have. And the athlete is responsible because again, whether they're age group or not that athlete is having certain experiences and understandings of their body that no one else can possibly know where interpret. So that responsibility falls on the athlete to be present and to be able to communicate ultimately what does and doesn't work. But the biggest thing here I could tell you is that when an athlete doesn't respond well to a taper program, you want to just take a note of it. Nothing is perfect. Trial and error is the name of the game. Ideally, athletes should be "tapering" air quotes, you should have more taper cycles than just one shot a year because then in five years you only have five chances to get the taper cycle right. So you guys should be playing with this. You should be constantly experimenting. I know for me, when I'm coming into a meet, the entire week, like a week and a half out from the meet I pretty much like I'm traveling already and I'm really not doing anything. I'm relaxing. I'm having fun. I'm eating good. I'm doing all the things that people would normally do after they win racing, but I do it before. It's a part of my taper. It works for me. And the days leading up, like the last couple of days. I'm in the water just some light technical stuff. But taper can look really different for a lot of people. Some people need to do nothing for three days. Some people need to do nothing for three weeks. And just understand that it's not going to be a one size fits all system. And just because you don't have success one time doesn't make you a failure. It makes you smarter. It means you had a lesson. So that's the most important thing to communicate to your athletes that not that you failed them or they failed but that you're still both in this process of learning what works best.

Taper should be tailored to the individual athlete, and coaches and athletes should take responsibility for learning what works best. Experimentation and trial and error is necessary, and failure is not a bad thing—it's an opportunity to learn about what works best for the individual.

For an 100, is it better to have a high elbow in recovery or a high arm like Vladimir Morozov?

The Benefits of a High Elbow in Swim Recovery: Expert Opinion

Hey, [? James. ?] This is a great question, man. Yeah, you're pretty much comparing that high elbow of the Dressel to that high arm of Vlad Morozov. Obviously, both two very dominant swimmers. My personal opinion is that it's better to have that high elbow in recovery. These are the reasons why. Number one, if you have that high elbow in recovery, what that means is that you're not finishing your stroke underwater all the way to full extension. You're not taking it all the way down to your kneecaps, which is just good, because as we know, when you're sprinting, really when you're swimming at all, all the work is being done in the front part of the stroke. After your stroke has gotten past your waist, you're really just wasting a stroke here, and you're taking a lot of time. You're cutting your stroke rate, and you're not just getting a whole lot of the back end of that stroke. Obviously, Vlad does an arm windmill all the way through, whereas someone like Dressel is breaking that stroke, and almost, like, [IMITATES WHIP CRACKING] whipping it around. That is my recommendation for that 100, really probably for just about any stroke style, but especially if we're talking about high octane.

Having a high elbow in recovery is better because it prevents you from taking the stroke all the way down to your knees, which wastes time and cuts your stroke rate.

In my opinion, it is better to have a high elbow in recovery rather than a high arm like Vladimir Morozov. When you have a high elbow in recovery, it means you're not extending your stroke all the way underwater to full extension, which is beneficial for sprinting. The work in swimming is primarily done in the front part of the stroke, and extending it beyond your waist is wasteful and slows down your stroke rate. Vladimir Morozov uses an arm windmill motion throughout his stroke, while someone like Dressel breaks the stroke and whips it around. This recommendation applies not only to the 100-meter race but also to other stroke styles, especially for high-intensity swimming.

We should drowned out that that we should murder that doubt with 25. Positive thoughts. I love me. Thank God. For my hands. Thank God for my legs. Thank God for my ability to compete. Thank God for the ability to be in this race. I'm grateful for the thing that I did. Well in this race, I'm grateful for the energy and excitement that I'm bringing to this race coming up. Thank God for the competition. Thank God for such a high level of competition that I know will require me to bring my Bessel. That's the definition of mental strength, your ability to kill doubt.

Full body mobility is obviously important for swimming, but which muscle groups are the most important to focus on for mobility?

Hey Garrett, great question. The most important muscle groups to focus on, I think. 100% is thoracic. Mobility throughout sick. Mobility is thousand percent. Can improve your underwater. It's going to prove your flips, can improve your start. If you see the top swimmers in the world, do that start they get that out of like really nice upper chest, Pike. Dive all that's the Rasik Mobility. Caleb dress was underwater thoracic Mobility. Ability, so that I think is the absolute most important after that severely underrated elbow Mobility, every stroke requires that high elbow catch, especially, especially backstroke, and then obviously, you know, the The Strokes on your stomach. So the Rasik and elbow Mobility do those two game-changers.

Thoracic Mobility and Elbow Mobility are the two most important muscle groups to focus on. Improving these will help with your underwater, flips, starts, and all other strokes.
