Can an image be technically, perfect, but emotionally lacking. Yes, I'd argue a lot of images are, if not most because most images are snapshots, right? Most images are pictures where somebody use the gear properly, they understood technically how to operate the camera, how to get focus. And if it was on a phone, the camera did the autofocus. They understood white balance again phone. Probably did the white balance form and maybe just from their life, they understand subconsciously. Lee a couple of good compositional rules and managed to capture a composition that works to the strengths of the image, but getting an emotionally. Impactful image is much more than that. It's more than just following the recipe. I'll give you an example. If you're in the kitchen, we all know somebody that's gotten a really good recipe from a family member and they go into the kitchen and they try and make that recipe and they follow it to the T. And at the end they say that doesn't taste like Like my mom's, but they followed it perfectly. It's technically perfect to the instructions in the way, the equipment was supposed to be used, but what they don't know. What three words would you use to describe your photography style? Great question. Love the fact that this is from Anonymous, for me, it would be captured the moment. And in honesty, it's going to change a little bit with every artist that I photograph or whatever it is that I'm photographing. But I would say, capture the moment, you can have a singer at a microphone on a stage doing nothing but standing at that microphone and singing and it is the most amazing technically perfect shot and it's It's boring and it doesn't convey the story, or the emotion, or the energy of the show, and at the same time you could have just a singer-songwriter standing there playing a guitar or just standing in a microphone singing and depending on who the artist is, that is the moment, right? And it conveys to their fans, what that artist is. But I would say no matter what it is, you're shooting its capture the moment.

If I were to describe my photography style in three words, it would be capture the moment. I believe that capturing the essence of a moment is crucial in photography. Hey Brett. Great question. What is negative space? And I'm actually going to refer to it as something else, which is in the old design World. They call it white space although it's not always white at, you know, think of a white piece of paper. I'll give you an example in a minute, but a good way to think of negative space is there are two kind of, I don't want to say competing, but two concepts in design and in photography, one of them is filled the frame. Meaning have your subject fill as much of the frame. As you can for that energy and that impact and the other one is to use the space around your subject to set scale to set the environment that they're in to give perspective on things. And negative space or whitespace is that ability to take a subject and Surround it by something else, which may be nothing. For example. One of my favorite magazine ads of all time, this goes back years and years was A bottle of Crown Royal whiskey in the middle of a magazine page. The page was Pure White, the bottle was fairly small in the bottom half and it was shattered and all it had was text in the top half of the page, which was Pure White up there, just saying grown men do cry. The scale of that white paper with a broken bottle. Kind of gave an emptiness feeling like you lost something in there and you'd lost your bottle of whiskey and grown men, do cry, white Space Blank Space - space can really, really add to a photo if it's done, right? Qualities do professionally taken photographs have that their amateur counterparts lack and the first thing I would say is an understanding of the medium and what it can do, a professional photographer by studying their craft tends to understand what tools are available to them Beyond. Just the camera, they understand the light plays a role, the pose plays a role, the depth plays a role, the subject matter placement plays a role. So for example, a professional would know how to Pose, somebody, if it's a person that's in the subject of the shot post, somebody that makes them look the most flattering. A landscape photographer would understand how to use that light. For example, to draw the human eye, where they want it, how to control that light and compose the scene in the strongest way. Keep in mind, the rules of composition are not really rules, people say they're guidelines, but they've existed for centuries. The old painters used compositional techniques to strengthen Their image to guide the human eye. They understand what a rule of thirds is or when a golden ratio is or they understand that if you play somebody in a landscape image, at the far edge of the image looking out of it, with space, behind them, that creates more tension than if you place them at one side with a lot of space in front of them in the image, a lot of empty space there. So a professional photographer tends to understand how to use the light. The pose, the compositional techniques and the gear. To get the best image and best story that they can amateurs. You can still take an iPhone out to a landscape and given the right day, with the right clouds, the right Sky, the right seen in the right lighting, you can get an amazing photo, right? How do you judge a good picture? I mean, that's actually an important thing to understand because art photography is subjective. So, you may judge a picture different than I judge a picture. So, understanding the context, The Source, all of that matter. So I'm going to go a different way. I'm going to talk about how images are judged in a competition environment and some of the ways that they judge, you may be able to apply to your own Speaking or understanding another picture or to your own work. So in an image competition setting like professional photographers of America. Generally, there are 12 elements to a merit image. Now when I say Merit image an image competition environment photographers normally get in a local competition or whatever, it is merits towards, you know, membership, status of some sort and sometimes a metal or something like that. So photographers are trying to get merits for there. Edges. And there are 12 points that images are judged across, and I'm not going to list them all here. I'll put a link down below but it's the impact of the image, the presentation of the image, the technical aspects of the image, the color Harmony of the image, etc, etc. So that puts everything on an even playing field. However, there are images that have come up in front of me when I'm judging an image competition, that in all honesty were not great competition. Titian images, they won't score. Well, they just don't fit that environment. But I guarantee you that the photo of that child, when it was given to the mom, got green merits meaning, she happily paid for it. She was excited about it. It may not be an award winning competition, wedding photo, but the bride and groom are hanging it on their wall, 20 by 24, and loving every minute of it. How do I decide on the compositions for my concert photos? Well, composition is an interesting thing. So even the masters of painting way, way back in the day used certain compositional techniques that we now generally refer to as composition rules or rules of composition. They're not really rules, they're guidelines, but they are proven techniques to help draw a viewer into an image to the subject that you're trying to portray. So for me, the ones that work for me when I'm looking at somebody else's work are rule of thirds. I love the rule of thirds. When I look through a viewfinder, I'm thinking rule of thirds. I'm framing and composing to rule of thirds. I also like the Fibonacci spiral or triangles and geometric shapes, so I use that a lot. And then one other thing that I love that works for me, I love extremes. I love super tight and super loose with what I call a lot of white space, an old graphic design term, where you might have a small singer and a huge amount of black stage to set the environment that you're in. So what I would suggest that you do is, if you wanna improve your composition, is learn all those different rules of composition, pick the ones that work for you, modify them for the type of genre or subject that you're photographing, and rely on those things that have been around literally for centuries.
