What has been the biggest change in your philosophy as an athletic trainer over your career?

Acknowledging the Body's Interconnectedness: A Trainer's Growing Wisdom

I really like this question, I'm very intentional about trying to learn new things and look at things from different perspectives to challenge, my own biases, and opinions and thought patterns. So I feel like there's a lot of different ways that I could answer this question. But the first thing that comes to mind is really just deepening. My appreciation for the fact that everything in the body is connected someone's like stiff ankles. Related to their neck pain. Someone's digestive issues is related to their low back pain. Someone's like, mental health, and stress issues, is 100% related to their injuries to their pain, to their quest for Peak athletic performance. I think in school were taught like a really isolated reductionist view of the body. And I Ink with some experience and what I'd like to think is some wisdom. I mean, maybe not but what I like to think is some wisdom is a deeper appreciation for the fact that everything is connected. Everything in the body is related and must be considered in evaluating and treating and rehabbing injuries and in chasing Peak Performance. So I don't know if that's so much a change in philosophy so much as A deepening and understanding, but that's the first thing that comes to mind.

The biggest change in my philosophy as an athletic trainer over my career has been a deepening appreciation for the interconnectedness of the body. In the past, I was taught to view the body in isolated, reductionist terms. However, with experience and what I hope is wisdom, I have come to understand that everything in the body is connected. Stiff ankles can be related to neck pain, digestive issues can be related to low back pain, and mental health and stress issues are intertwined with injuries and athletic performance. This understanding has influenced how I evaluate, treat, and rehabilitate injuries, as well as how I approach the pursuit of peak performance. It's not so much a change in philosophy, but rather a deeper understanding of the complexity and interconnected nature of the body.

Thank you for that answer. Ted, my answer would have been very similar. Human Locomotion by Thomas shot and Anatomy trains by Tom. Myers are two of the like foundational books that I find myself going back to and recommending to others. As far as like continuing education courses, Active Release techniques was very helpful for learning Anatomy with my hands. More than any specific protocol. I felt like those courses helped really refine my palpation. And then pasta restoration Institute has a number of good courses that I felt like improved my assessments and my understanding of how the body compensates when things aren't working. Well there are certainly others but those are kind of the Bedrock Foundation. The things that I find myself going back to over and over.

Thank you for the question. I would say that two foundational books that have greatly influenced my practice are Human Locomotion by Thomas Michaud and Anatomy Trains by Tom Myers. These books have been invaluable resources that I often refer back to and recommend to others.

In terms of continuing education courses, I found that Active Release Techniques (ART) was particularly helpful in developing my hands-on understanding of anatomy. It improved my palpation skills more than any specific protocol. Additionally, the courses offered by the Postural Restoration Institute have enhanced my assessments and deepened my understanding of how the body compensates when things aren't functioning optimally.

While there are certainly other courses and resources that have influenced my practice, these books and courses serve as the bedrock foundation that I consistently return to for guidance and knowledge.
