Debunking the Myth: Podcasting is Not Easy

The question is, what are some common misconceptions about podcasting and how would you correct them? Here's the biggest one, that podcasting is easy. I don't care if you have a podcast where you record on voice notes on your iPhone and then you upload it to podcast platforms, or if you have a multi-million dollar production. Podcasting is not easy. It takes dedication, commitment, hard work, planning, preparation, and then after all those things, you have to have an interesting conversation that other people are gonna wanna listen to, whether that conversation is with somebody else or with yourself if yours is narrative style. None of these things are easy. It takes a tremendous amount of work that goes into all aspects of it. Planning guests, creating the content, and then post-production. How are we gonna promote it? What are people gonna wanna hear? What are the sections that people wanna hear? What are all those aspects that create a great show? Podcasting is one of those, it's a lot of fun, but it's a lot of work. Jump in, do it.

On top of all that, you need to engage in interesting conversations that will attract listeners. None of these aspects are easy; they demand a tremendous amount of effort. From planning guests to creating content and handling post-production, there's a lot to consider. Promotion strategies and identifying what kind of content resonates with listeners also play a crucial role in creating a successful show. While podcasting can be enjoyable, it's important to recognize the significant amount of work involved. So if you're interested in starting a podcast, be prepared to put in the necessary effort and jump right into it.

How long do you usually run your episode intros?

The Jedberg Podcast: Debating the Length of Episode Intros

The question is, how long do you usually run your episode intros? So, hot topic of debate on the Jedberg Podcast, we have gone through the entire iteration of super long intros specific to every episode. Way back in the beginning, I even read the guest bio. Then we tailored it down where I gave a synopsis of each one of the points that we take away from the conversation, and my favorite part of each conversation. Recently, and what you'll see in the episodes that started coming out, I think last week or the week before, and for the next several, is actually no specific episode intro. We just have the Jedberg Podcast or the jumping in standard intro introducing the show, and then we get right into the conversation, which I think you can do if you take the first few minutes of each one of your conversations and you dedicate it to introducing your guest, talking about why you want to do it, and the importance of the conversation. We used to have a super long intro for each episode, then we tailored it down. Now we don't have an episode-specific intro at all and just jump right into the conversation after the standard podcast intro. We're always trying to iterate and are open to feedback.

Usually, we have had a hot debate about the length of episode intros on the Jedberg Podcast. In the beginning, we had super long intros that were specific to each episode. I would even read the guest's bio. Then we started shortening it by giving a synopsis of the key takeaways from the conversation and my favorite part of each discussion. However, recently, we've experimented with not having a specific episode intro at all. We now start with the standard Jedberg Podcast or jumping-in intro, introduce the show, and dive right into the conversation. We've found that this approach works well if we take the first few minutes of each conversation to introduce the guest, discuss why we're having the conversation, and highlight its importance.
