Terrifying Climbing Experience: Escape from Falling Rocks!

What has been my scariest screamer? I would typically say when I've been climbing traditional route and then a block of rock is loose and it kind of comes out and it's a bigger block you know maybe two foot by two foot or three foot by three foot and it moves and it kind of falls when you fall because it moved it fell and you're trying to get out of the way and keep it from hitting the rope all in like one second that's been pretty terrifying

My scariest screamer? I'd have to say it's when I'm climbing a traditional route and suddenly a large block of rock becomes loose. It starts to shift and then falls while I'm still on the route. In that split second, I have to quickly move out of the way to avoid getting hit by the falling block and ensure it doesn't damage the rope. It's definitely a heart-pounding experience.

How can someone best prevent injury in a speed climb? First and foremost, when you're moving fast that fast, as if you're racing someone, you're climbing a bit more out of control. I mean you're in control but you're out of control. So your feet aren't going to be exactly where you want them to be. They're going to go somewhere else. Your hands aren't going to go exactly where you want them to be. They're going to go somewhere else. And your body position is going to change also. So that being said, you're opening the door to going ahead in entering upon an injury situation. So when you're going fast, try to keep it in control rather than going all the way to the out of control situation. And speed climbing only is a short time. You know, you're not going three hours as fast as you can because no one can physically do that. So be in control when you go and it'll decrease the risk for injuries.

So, ultimately, I would say that it's the danger factor. And the way I like to go ahead and respond to that is say, I get to choose to put myself into a dangerous situation. And if I choose not to, then I've mitigated the risk. So, anytime where there is great risk, typically, I would say most of the time, there's always, you know, random chance, but most of the time you can mitigate the risk and avoid it if you'd like. Or you can step into it and see what's going to happen. But I think the danger is the biggest myth about climbing.

What should I leave behind if I am in an emergency situation? Ultimately, without any experience, you would probably end up leaving too much. But that being said, if you're alive, by the time you get to the bottom, you left the right amount. So each placement, whether it's a nut or a cam or a hex or something like that, can be determined whether it's safe or not. And if one piece isn't safe, then you're going to leave two pieces. If one tree isn't good enough to sling, you're going to leave two trees slung. If one rock or chalk that's in a crack isn't good enough to sling because it doesn't seem safe, you're going to leave two. And if two isn't good enough, you're going to leave three. So that being said, you want to go ahead and try to be surrounding yourself with an experienced climber who can help you through that process. But ultimately, if you're doubting one, leave another one. If you're doubting two, leave a third. It's not worth dying over.

In an emergency situation, always err on the side of caution. Leave behind two pieces (or more) if you are in doubt about the safety of one. Make sure to bring an experienced climber to help with the process.

The most difficult weather condition you've encountered while climbing and how you overcame it. Well, if you're climbing rock and it's wet, you're screwed. You can't really do anything because it's wet and you're going to slip off. So you wait until it dries off. If you are trying to climb high performance, typically the heat will go ahead and make that extremely difficult because your hands will start sweating and guess what? Be wet again and then you'll be slipping off. So you climb when it is not so hot and when it is not so wet. So maybe when it's not so hot, it might be in the night or you wait a whole different season. And when it's wet, you just wait until it's dry.

The most difficult weather condition I've encountered while climbing is wet rock. To overcome it, I wait until the rock dries off and climb when it is not too hot or wet.

Indoor or outdoor climbing: Risk remains regardless of location

Is climbing indoors safer or does it carry the same amount of risks as outdoor climbing? I would say that both climbing at any time, any place, anywhere is equally dangerous if you're thinking about the danger. You can still have something go wrong with your belayer inside or outside. You can have a gym that maybe doesn't check the carabiners on the lead walls and you can get hurt because a rope could be damaged. That same thing can happen outside on real rock. Boulder problems, you could have rock break when you're climbing on it just like a hold could spin or become loose or break when you're climbing on it indoors. Just because there's padding on the ground doesn't mean you're gonna be safe. It just means the risk is decreased. So I would say anytime you're climbing, it doesn't matter where you're at, there's still risk.

Climbing indoors and outdoors both carry risks, so it is important to take safety precautions no matter where you are climbing.
