Surviving Difficult Situations: The Power of Selfless Leaders

So who do you want to follow? A selfless leader or a selfish leader? You know, obviously not to be patronizing, we would prefer the selfless servant over the selfish tyrant every day. But let's face it, we are sort of prone to be more selfish than selfless because pop culture and society and everything has taught us what is good for me is, well, good for me. But the fact of the matter is we need selfless servants in order to survive on the battlefield, for instance, or in that crucible. You know, individually and institutionally, this idea of someone who puts the needs of others first, his ranger buddy on his left and right, his team, his company, his country or her country first, is far more preferable than somebody who says, what's in it for me? Why? Because what's in it for me is going to run the first time things get difficult. What's in it for me is going to, you know, drop things and hide when everything gets tough. So we need, obviously, this logic. We need selfless people to lead us when it's difficult or else we're going to crumble. We, whatever institutional or individual size element we're talking about, will crumble if we don't have selfless leaders.

We need selfless leaders to survive in difficult times. They are more preferable than selfish people, who will only be concerned with what is in it for them and run away from responsibility when things get tough.

First Sergeant Matt Eversmann is an American hero who embodies the importance of duty, courage, and selfless service in extraordinary circumstances. In 1993, Matt led a raid against an enemy militia in Mogadishu, Somalia. His inspiring story of survival was depicted in the film Black Hawk Down. For his actions, he was awarded the Bronze Star.
