At what age should I start watching out for cataracts? This is a great question and the answer it could be at any age depending on the underlying cause to the cataract and what a cataract is is a cloudiness inside the lens and the lens is the oval like structure that sits behind the brown or blue part of our eye which is our iris and the purpose of the lens is to serve as basically the fine focus of the camera it's what focuses light rays directly on our retina which is in the back of our eyes so that we can form a very clear image of what we see and so if we develop any cloudiness in that lens that is what's called a cataract and the most common reasons we'll see cataracts just like people which is age-related or see now cataracts that's probably the most common thing that we see in our field but there are other causes so diseases like diabetes many dogs will develop cataracts related to being diabetic eventually after being diagnosed with this disease we will see cataracts and very young dogs as well either referred to as congenital cataracts if they have them from birth or juvenile cataracts if they develop them at a very young age if some dogs can develop cataracts at six months or a year or a year and a half on of age unfortunately related to their genetics so if you ever notice a cloudiness inside your dog's eye or they seem to be having trouble seeing and bumping and stumbling into things it may be a good idea to see a veterinarian or a veterinary ophthalmologist so that we can look and rule out something like cataracts

Cloudy Eyes in Dogs: Common Causes and Concerns

Why are my dog's eyes cloudy? This is something I see very commonly as a veterinary ophthalmologist and there's a number of reasons that you can see for this. Sometimes it may be concerning, sometimes it may not be concerning at all. A lot of times this will be something that owners notice at home that animals eyes are getting cloudy. It may be something your general vet may notice, but when they present to me the most common causes that I'll see for cloudiness, one can be just a normal age-related change called nuclear sclerosis or lenticular sclerosis where the lens, the little M&M shaped structure inside the eye behind the iris, it ages as we age and as it ages new fibers are added on the outside and it makes the middle, the nucleus, very dense and over time that density will become cloudy. And so those cases that is not something that needs surgery. Most dogs still see very well with that type of cloudiness. For people, the way that lenticular sclerosis would present is what's called presbyopia. So you start having trouble seeing close up because your lens, now that it's a lot more dense, can't move the way it used to be able to focus on structure. So you have trouble seeing things close up. You have to hold the menu or your iPhone a little bit further away from your face. So with dogs we don't really do anything about that because it doesn't cause a major issue. Some of the other things we'll see that causes this, cataracts, that would be the biggest concern and the biggest way you may know that is they may start having trouble seeing. They may start bumping into things and a cataract is where that lens turns truly cloudy and they can't see through it. If it is a cataract, then many times they will see someone like me, a veterinary ophthalmologist, to consider cataract surgery to remove it and then see if we can improve their vision. So that's probably the biggest reasons for cloudiness in eyes of animals.

Why do dogs go blind? Before we answer that, it's important to understand what creates vision in our eyes and in dogs eyes. And so the most important structures inside of our eye that is responsible for vision is essentially our lens and our retina. And our retina is the film in the camera. That's basically what captures light and sends it along the optic nerve up to our brain to be interpreted as vision. And our lens is basically the fine focus of that camera that allows us to see near and far and back and forth so we can focus on different images and have a clear picture of what we're seeing. And so vision loss can occur from a lot of different angles with things inside the eye. If there's any sort of retinal disease where the retina is damaged or not functioning or detached, that'll cause blindness. If there's any sort of damage to the optic nerve as it follows its course up to the brain or the area in our brain that is responsible for interpreting vision, that can also cause vision loss. Anything involving the lens, the most obvious thing that we think about are cataracts, which is a cloudiness of the lens, will also affect vision and possibly cause blindness. And anything in the front of our eye, which is our cornea, which the cornea is basically like the windshield of a car. And so any cloudiness or scarring or opacity of the cornea can also affect vision. So there are a lot of different things that can cause blindness and a lot of different diseases that affect each one of those layers within the eye or the nerves going up to the brain or the brain itself. So maybe a good idea to see a veterinarian to determine which cause.
