So the biggest thing with pain in a pet is to make sure that they're not obese. So keeping them on a nice lean body condition score is really ideal. So that's first and foremost and then making sure that you don't over or under exercise them because either way can actually be really bad. So if they do get pain, there are a lot of natural and alternative options to include acupuncture, laser therapy, electromagnetic field, you know, devices that actually can help with pain. But there's also supplements like glucosamine and chondroitin, collagen, some of the other ones that we use are fish oil, green-lipped muscle. So there's a lot of natural type stuff out there and actually CBD can help. So this is one area where I do recommend CBD and that is as an adjunct for pain control. So yeah, just make sure that you keep them in a nice lean body condition, lots of good controlled exercise, nothing too much, nothing too little. And if they do get pain, talk to your veterinarian about some options.

So most often when we're talking about medications for pain, we're either targeting nerve pain, so with medications like Lyrica, which is pregabalin, or gabapentin. Those medications have very few side effects as far as long-term side effects, but they can be sedating initially. Most animals tend to power through the sedation side effect the longer that they're taking them, but there are also medications that they can't be stopped suddenly, so they have to be weaned off because there is a potential for seizure activity if you discontinue it suddenly. The other pain medications that we oftentimes use are non-steroidal anti-inflammatories. So these are like you and I taking Motrin, but dogs can't take Motrin because of the side effects. But biggest side effects with these can be GI upset, so vomiting, diarrhea, we can see ulcer formation unfortunately in the gut, and then also there is the potential for liver and kidney damage long-term. So these medications need to be monitored with regular blood work to make sure that your pet is tolerating them. Now unfortunately it's not one of those things that we can predict that the pet is going to get side effects, so we just have to monitor, and if there are then we stop them. But it's better to treat for pain than to worry about them.

So if your vet is not on board with either treating or realizing, recognizing that there is pain in your pet, perhaps getting a second opinion it would be worthwhile. So just be their advocate, notice the behavior changes, take videos at home of your pet doing things that they wouldn't normally do in the vet's office like going up and down stairs, jumping into and out of vehicles so that way your vet can see what your dog or cat does when they're uncomfortable.
