What’s the best lighting to separate a subject from the background?

The question is, what's the best lighting to separate a subject from the background? And the best lighting would be an edge light. So if you were to put the subject, let's say up against the sunset, or if there's a big wall and the Sun is peering over the wall or through trees, if you put the subject in front of that light and then either use a fill card or strobe or if even there's a natural white wall as a fill, you can create a ratio Of creating an edge, which you'll see a lot in cinema film, it called Edge lights, and then you want to fill in the face, if that's the aesthetic that you're going for. But the best way to create a separation from subject, to the background is an edge light, or by using very shallow, depth of field which will then have the focus be on the subject, not on the back of it while not highlight in the background but I always try to shoot with the cleanest background. Crafting a Photography Portfolio Website: Showcasing Your Best Work

Hey guys. How's it going? My name is Todd, Glaser. This is my first question. I'm answering. So bear with me as I'm learning the process, but I'm super excited to be on this app and I'm really excited to connect with everybody. But the first question I saw was, what is important when making a photography website? It's a really good question. I am actually, maybe not the best person to answer that, which is why I thought I would be the one to answer it because I went from developing my own website. It like taking a flash course several several years ago which I spent more time on like the back end and I did actually learning telling the story. Like as we know photography is all about telling a story and you want your website to be the best representation of your work. So what I would suggest is going through your images and choosing the set of images that best represent you and your work. It's really easy to over edit and share too much, which could Could potentially like dilute the way that a client or the way that you represent your work. If you have too many images that are too similar to one another, it could confuse a potential client or just not show a whole lot of diversity or range. So when you're putting together a website, you want it to be easy to scroll through. Ideally you don't want to have super high resolution images so you so it doesn't take forever to load and you just want to have Collection of your best work. Most people scroll through a website and it's kind of like meeting someone for the first time. You want the first image to be the most impactful and to be the best representation of you and your work and then if your commercial client or commercial photographer or an editorial photographer and you break it into sections, that's always nice. I think when I'm trying to get a job or if I'm trying to show my best work I tried. I too, I try to create sections of like maybe a package of images of like three to five or ten images that that all Encompass one theme or idea without repeating itself. What do you put on the front of your port to keep it dry?

Pro Tips for Keeping Your Ports Dry in Underwater Photography

Hey Sachi. How's it going? I hope you're well. Thank you so much for your question. The question was, how do I what I put on the front port? To keep it dry. Usually when I'm shooting in the water. Yeah, I have two ports. Either a flat part, which I use for a telephoto lens or a dome port for for a wide-angle lens. But for the flat part to keep dry, I shoot sorry. I shoot I shoot the Dome Port wet which means before I go in the water I like use this, my saliva or Spit and lick on it and dunk the housing in the water just to make sure it doesn't leak. But also that way, it creates like a thin film of water to shoot through, which is great for wide angle. But for a short telephoto or a longer telephoto, you're shooting through like this thin layer water and the images aren't as sharp for a flat part. What I'll do is I actually I don't put anything on the port, I will, I'll swim out and always test your housing before you get in the water. And then I'll use the palm. On my hand to kind of rub the port, and the oils from my hand, usually help the water beat off. And then when I pull the housing up out of the water, all kind of shake it a little bit and then you can see the water, the Water Drops Fall Off, it gets a little tricky, if you're in like a sandbar situation like where you shoot a lot in Ocean Beach but I personally don't like using any sort of material. I feel like you become dependent on it. Some people used to like rub potatoes on the front but I've always just Just the grease, my hand or a little bit from behind your ear and rub it on the front and rinse your housing with fresh water after each use that way, the salt water doesn't stick to the port. I notice just by rinsing it, the housing, the water beads off a lot quicker after a while. And actually for my 7200 poor. I just replaced the front element on it after about four years using it. So that's another kind of nice. Trick is, if you can, if your Port allows it to to change it changes the front element on your report, every couple of years. So hopefully that helps a big fan of your work. And thank you for the question.

Hey Sachi! Thanks for your question. When it comes to keeping my port dry while shooting in the water, I have two types of ports: a flat port for telephoto lenses and a dome port for wide-angle lenses.

For the dome port, I use a technique called shooting wet. Before entering the water, I apply a thin layer of saliva or spit on the port and then dunk the housing in the water. This helps create a film of water to shoot through, which is ideal for wide-angle shots.

However, for the flat port, I don't put anything on it. Instead, I swim out and always test my housing before getting in the water. Then, I use the palm of my hand to rub the port. The natural oils from my hand help the water bead off. When I pull the housing out of the water, I give it a little shake to make the water droplets fall off.

In situations where there's a lot of sand, like in an ocean beach, it can be a bit trickier. Some people use materials like potatoes to rub on the port, but personally, I prefer using the grease from my hand or a little bit from behind my ear. I also make sure to rinse the housing with fresh water after each use to prevent saltwater from sticking to the port. Over time, I've noticed that regular rinsing helps the water bead off more quickly.

Additionally, if your port allows it, it's a good idea to change the front element every couple of years. I recently replaced the front element on my 7200 port after about four years of use.

Capturing the Clear Waters and Deep Culture of Tahiti: A Photographer's Favorite Destination

Thank you so much for the question, Marcy. The question is, where's my favorite place I've ever ever traveled to shooting. Underwater photos is probably my favorite way to make photos while my hair's really bad. Sorry about that guys. So I would say to he D is probably my favorite place in the world to go to the water. Super clear. All about Asians are super friendly and when you go there you stay in like this little pension. So you're you're staying with a local family. The food is amazing and just a really deep culture connected by the water. So if I had to choose a favorite place to travel to to make photos or just to go, I would say Tahiti or my wife and I like to go to Italy. She works for Vineyard out in Tuscany so we do love to go there quite a bit, not a lot of surf but a lot of great roads ride bikes and a lot of great wine to. So thank you.

Tahiti and Italy are my two favorite places to travel to take photos or just to enjoy the culture. The clear water, friendly locals and amazing food in Tahiti make it a special place, while Italy offers great roads for biking and lots of delicious wine.

Thank you for the question, Marcy. My favorite place I've ever traveled to for shooting underwater photos is Tahiti. The water there is incredibly clear, and the locals are very friendly. When you visit, you can stay in a small pension and experience the local culture. The food is amazing, and the whole experience is deeply connected to the water.

If I had to choose another favorite place to travel to, it would be Italy. My wife works for a vineyard in Tuscany, so we love going there. While there may not be much surfing, it offers beautiful roads for bike rides and, of course, fantastic wine.

So, overall, my top choices would be Tahiti for underwater photography and Italy for its scenic beauty, biking, and wine. Thank you!

From Surf PE to Career: How Surf Photography Became a Passion

Hey everyone. Let's see, the question is, how did you realize your photography was what you want to do? I first started doing surf photography or making pictures when I was in Surf. PE in high school we had the option to take in Surf PE which would basically mean we'd go to the beach instead of run laps around the track which is really cool. It's kind of something native to San But I just loved being in the water. I really appreciated waking up early and going surfing with my friends and surf photography kind of gave me a way to not only like document the sessions my friends and I were having but also still being the water with them. I never just wanted to be on on the land, looking all my friends riding waves. So I thought if I was in the water with a camera it'd be like I was right there surfing with them and As far as a career goes, I for a long time, I didn't really think it would be a viable career. Even though I know there were there were surf photographer has who had done it for a long time. I just, I probably never thought my work was either good enough or I was going to the right places or I don't really, I don't really know why I didn't think I was able to do it, but I ended up going to school and getting a degree in commercial advertising and the first thing I did after Um, schools, I went on a surf trip with some friends and ended up turning into a story for Surfer magazine and that kind of kick started my career to the next level I guess but really surf photography. For me, it's a culmination of being a portrait photographer landscape photographer, Travel Photographer. A little bit of an athlete especially when you're in the water. So I got to combine, you know, all my passions of like travel photography and Surf and art into Into a career but really just being able to be in the water and spend time in the water with a camera. AquaTech Water Housings: Effortless Interchangeability for Stunning Results

Hey everyone. The question is what the best water housing is and currently over the last five or six years I've been using AquaTech water. Housings. Most recently, I'm using this one. The most, this is the new Edge housing, which is really nice. It has two claps on it. All the buttons on the back, and this is for a Fuji effects 100s. So for the last couple of months, I've been using a medium format Digital camera in the water and the results are pretty incredible. But I love this housing because it's really easy to Interchange the ports. I have full functions of all the cameras and I'm not like, fiddling around with a bunch of wing nuts, trying to tighten and tighten the The the housing, every time we need to either change a battery or change a card. So for me, like I said for the last five years or so, I've just been using the AquaTech housings and I like how if I do have to change the poor or change lens or change cameras, all the parts are interchangeable. So I'm not traveling with like twice, Ximena gear, whereas some housings you their front of front camera loaded. So anytime you have to have a new Port, you have to have a new base plate for that as well. So, So I found this system to be the most efficient for me, and also the team out of Huntington, super easy to work with and they're reliable. And you call them and someone answers the phone and so, yeah, hope that helps. Thanks again.

The best water housing, in my experience, is the AquaTech housing. Specifically, I have been using their new Edge housing, which is designed for the Fuji X100S camera. This housing features two clamps and allows full access to all the camera's buttons.

What I love about this housing is how easy it is to interchange the ports. I have full functionality of the camera without the hassle of dealing with multiple wing nuts to tighten the housing. It's convenient when I need to change batteries or memory cards.

For the past five years, I have been using AquaTech housings, and I appreciate that all the parts are interchangeable. This means I don't have to carry extra gear when I need to change lenses or cameras. Some housings require separate base plates for different ports, but with AquaTech, everything is streamlined.
