So I think that overall there's been a lot of different wonderful things we've learned about animals since researching their behavior. Probably one of the most significant things is the fact that they have their own personalities and we can see that they've got emotions. So just like humans, being able to connect with animals in an emotional way is one of the reasons why we really care a lot about certain species. So we care a lot about dogs because they can emotionally connect to us. We can read their behavior really well. So by studying more about animals, we can connect more people to animals and get more people to care about animals if we show that they've got similar type emotions. Another thing that has come out of great animals is animal behavior research is the fact that they're highly, highly intelligent. A lot more intelligent than we thought before we started studying. It's pretty well known that the great apes are very intelligent, dolphins are, but did you know that pigs are super intelligent? Rodents, believe it or not, are. They're capable of complex problem solving. Those are things that we would have never been able to discover or anything about dolphins for that matter had we not had this kind of research into their cognitive ability.

And that will give us insight into how that entire ecosystem is doing as a whole. So a really great example of this is the North American River Otter. They're known as a keystone species. So based on how that species is doing in the wild can give a bigger picture and is representative of how that entire ecosystem is doing in the wild. So as the North American River Otter populations have really skyrocketed, that's an implication that you can kind of correlate to the entire ecosystem is doing really well. They're able to find food, they have predators that are keeping their populations under control, everything is in a balance. And conversely, when they're doing really poorly, there's probably a lot of ecosystem problems going on. So I think that's the first way that we can benefit from global wildlife monitoring. And I think most importantly, if you don't know where something is as a baseline, it's really hard to know if you're making a difference in the efforts that you're putting towards, you know, say saving a endangered species. So doing monitoring of the wildlife populations, you're able to say, okay, there are X number of animals here in the wild, and we want to have 10 X. So we know where to start. And we know what our goal is.

Effective Strategies for Wildlife Conservation: A Multimodal Approach

All right, what strategies are most effective for wildlife conservations? I have worked with an organization called Global Conservation Force for many years. And one reason why I really support and care about the mission of this organization is because they have a multi-modal approach. So they look at four different areas of wildlife conservation and support different organizations within each of those. So the first one is anti-poaching. So in order to conserve species, we have to protect those that are there in the wild. Supporting rangers that protect the areas, developing different technology to track and monitor any endangered species so we know where they're at. Next is the kind of like veterinary in-situ conservation efforts where you are doing rescue and release and rehabilitation of endangered and threatened wildlife. Next would be kind of like the community education and awareness building. So this can be everything from working in local communities to let them know how important the animals are that they have there and how they can prevent them from going extinct, all the way to doing wildlife documentaries and letting people all across the world know about the plight of different animals. And then finally, the last kind of component that I think comes into being able to have a successful wildlife conservation program is by implementing counter-trafficking measures. So that would be going to legislation in the government and trying to look for harsher punishments and follow through on poaching and greater protections of different species. So by taking all of those into account, anti-poaching, veterinary care, education, and legislation, you can have a really great multimodal approach to wildlife conservation.
