The things I like to do start with trying to manage the environment that pet is in so we don't expose them to things that cause them a lot of anxiety. So if they are fearful of firecrackers or thunderstorms I look for the quietest place in the home, often that is a bathroom, a finished basement or walk in closet with clothes and carpeting because those areas absorb sound the most. And you'll find that many dogs and some cats will choose those locations automatically because they know it's the most comfortable, least scary spot to be. The next thing you want to do is play a white noise machine or a box fan blowing that can drown out some of that background sounds. I like cooling mats for dogs because sometimes a cool surface helps reduce anxiety. You might even try a thunder shirt or compression blanket. A weighted blanket can for some pets be very comfortable and helps reduce the stress and anxiety. The next thing I really consider is try to make it a happy time and comfort your pet. And if the anxiety is still really high you should see your veterinarian for help with medications to reduce their anxiety associated with noise because it can be disabling.
