Starting out wanting to be a jazz musician, Jonny speaker studied at Juilliard and played piano for the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre. For optimal recovery, I recommend athletes consume extra virgin olive oil. It's one of the most anti-inflammatory fats, and it has highly positive effects on cardiovascular health and inflammation. Transcript: "Are there any specific types of healthy fats that I recommend for athletes to consume for optimal recovery? If I had to pick one, it would be extra virgin olive oil. I think this is a medicinal food. It's one of the most anti-inflammatory fats you can possibly consume, right up there with fish oil. It's pretty easy to consume right out of the bottle. I do that all the time. I take it literally as a supplement. Because of its highly positive effects on cardiovascular health and on inflammation, I'd suggest that as part of your recovery routine on a regular basis."
I highly recommend taking electrolytes to help with optimal recovery after exercise. Two brands I use are KTO by Designs for Health and LMNT by Rob Wolf. Transcript: "Do I recommend any specific supplements or sports drinks for athletes to consume during or after exercise for optimal recovery? Well, there are many, but the one I want to make the case for, the take home, is electrolytes. A high quality electrolyte. I use KTO by Designs for Health. Another really good one is the one made by my friend Rob Wolf called LMNT. Wonderful. I keep these in my tennis bag. I add it to my water. Long story as to why you need these electrolytes, but you do need them. We don't get enough of them. We sweat them out when we exercise. Take your electrolytes."
The APOB test is a type of advanced lipid profile, which is a better cholesterol test. It measures the number of APOB proteins in your system, which is a good measure of the number of lipoproteins in circulation, giving similar results to the particle test. Transcript: "The question is, can I describe the APOB test and how it relates to the particle test? The particle test is an advanced lipid profile, for want of a better word, a better cholesterol test. It tells you information like how many lipoproteins you've got in circulation. That's a very important metric that the HDL-LDL test doesn't tell us. However, the APOB tells us that information almost as well, if not exactly as well. The reason is that every LDL particle in your system, in your body, in your circulatory system has a protein wrapped around it called an APOB protein. And if you count the APOB proteins, you're basically counting the number of particles. So it's a very good surrogate for the harder to get particle test."
For inspiration, I look to the writings of stoic philosophers and good music. Transcript: "I like this question. The question is, when you need inspiration, where do you look? Well, for me, I find a lot of inspiration in the writings of the Stoic philosophers, Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, Epictetus. And I read the Daily Stoic, which is a volume put out by Ryan Holiday every day. I find it inspirational and energizing and a good reminder of the principles that I believe in, which is that we need to be responsible for our own stuff and take care of the things we can control and understand the difference between what we can control and what we can't, which is kind of the serenity prayer in a nutshell. And the other thing I look for for inspiration is music. If I'm down, which doesn't happen very often, or low energy, usually one of my favorite artists will lift me right up. So that's my answer, the Stoics and some good music."
There is no scientific evidence to suggest any benefit from drinking alkaline or hydrogen water, and the few studies that have been conducted on the subject have not been able to conclude that it has any beneficial effect. Transcript: "What are the benefits of drinking alkaline water? I'm going to combine my answer with what are the benefits of drinking hydrogen water because I'm asked that a lot as well. And my answer is the same for both. I don't think there are any. I certainly have not seen any serious science showing a benefit of alkaline water, hydrogen water. There's a lot of anecdotal evidence. These things are sold with multi-level marketing companies. I think their science is kind of bogus. The very, very, very few studies I've been able to find where they compare maybe 12 people who are drinking the alkaline or the hydrogenated water versus regular, they're not really even sure that the benefit is from the alkaline or the hydrogen as opposed to just being hydrated for the first time in their life. So I'm kind of a no on alkaline water."
High-quality mineral supplements, like those found on Full Script, are unlikely to contain toxic doses of any mineral. Transcript: "The question is, can mineral supplements be toxic in large amounts? Anything can be toxic in extremely large amounts. Anything. If you're talking about a high quality multi-mineral or mineral supplement, such as you would buy at an authorized dispensary like Fullscript, I can't imagine in a million years that there's any single dosage of any mineral in one of those supplements that would be toxic. If you're unsure how to buy at Fullscript, go to my website. I have an article on how to set up your own Fullscript account. It's called How and Why to Buy Supplements. It'll tell you how to set up your own account. Those are all the doctor brands. Those are the ones we use, professionals use. They're the ones that I use with my family and myself. I can pretty much guarantee you every one of those is vetted, and nothing has a toxic dose. You can feel very safe buying almost any brand that they carry."
