The Potential Risks and Rewards of Angel Investing: High Risks, High Returns

The question is, what are the potential risks and rewards of angel investing? Well, yeah, these are risky investments. First off, for startups and small businesses, the failure rate is very high, and there is a very high likelihood that you can lose your entire investment. It's also not a liquid investment. Generally, you're investing in a company, and it's going to take a while before there's any opportunity for you to get your money back or make a profit on your money, sometimes three to five years. Also, you're making a decision and a choice to invest with very limited information. The companies usually have limited financial and operating history. Some of them don't even have any revenues yet. Early angel investing is really believing in a company early on and really trusting that you have the right information to benefit from some of the rewards, which are high potential returns. We all know about the companies that have done very well, Facebook and Google and Uber, who've provided multiple high returns on your investment. You do get equity ownership in the company, which is different than just buying a stock. The other thing is you're supporting innovation and ownership for entrepreneurship, which is creating jobs and more opportunities. I think it's a great investment, but it's definitely something that you have to really look closely at because there are high risks, but also potentially good returns.

Military Enlistment: A Path to Education and Resilience

The question is, why did you enlist in the military? Well, mine is maybe a little bit different. I definitely joined in 1984 the Marine Corps to serve my country, but one of the other big reasons was for help to pay for college. So, not having the funds or ability or opportunity to pay for college, it was a great resource, of course, through being in the military and going through Marine Corps boot camp. I also learned a lot of skills and values that helped me. I didn't know about it, but it helped me later in life to follow systems and procedures and to perform under pressure, as well as values of courage and integrity, teamwork, leadership, and loyalty. So, when I joined, it was to help pave the way for college and to learn a trade, maybe, but it turned out to offer a lot more value after serving in the military.

I didn't have the means or opportunities to pay for college, so joining the military seemed like a great resource. Beyond that, serving in the Marine Corps provided me with valuable skills and values that I didn't initially anticipate benefiting from later in life. So I've been in government contracting for over 25 years and there are small business programs at different levels in government. There are programs at the city level, municipal level, county level, state level, federal, and then also private corporations have small business programs as well. These programs are often defined as a small business opportunity or a diversity small business opportunity. Small business programs for just small businesses are usually defined by the revenues you hold or the number of employees you have. Diversity type businesses are minority owned businesses, women owned businesses, veteran owned businesses, or disadvantaged owned businesses. And those types of programs there's also additional categories that may be available between different municipalities or agencies. All these programs offer opportunities for small business. Wherever you're located or whichever program you want to participate in, it's definitely a good idea to look into these small business programs and see how you might get an opportunity to provide your product or service to these agencies.

Inside Marine Corps Training: 14 Weeks That Transform

The question is, what is basic training like? So, I served in the Marine Corps and in 1984 attended the Marine Corps Basic Training Boot Camp in San Diego. 120 seconds isn't really enough to share what it's like. It was the toughest time I've ever had, but it's the most I've ever grown and learned in a 14-week period. So, I'll tell you, I took a few notes to share, you know, of course there's intense physical conditioning. There's rigorous physical training that's occurring throughout those 14 weeks. It's both mentally and emotionally challenging. I think they aim to toughen you up by breaking you down and building you back up again. Of course, during that training, we have weapons training and also combat skills. I think one of the bigger things is the values and ethos that are instilled into the Marines, a level of leadership and teamwork and camaraderie. I think that the field training, along with all the other training, lets you earn the opportunity to become and be called a Marine.

The question is, what is angel investing and how does it differ from other types of investments? So I've been an angel investor for about five years now, and I consider myself still a beginner. But angel investing is early stage investment, providing money to startups in exchange for equity ownership. This is usually very early stages of a startup, and they don't have a proven track record. Oftentimes it's an idea on a napkin. This is the time before any kind of series fundraising that they do where they're bringing in friends and family to invest in the company in exchange for an equity ownership or stake in the company. This is usually a long term investment. It can take anywhere from two to five years until there's a potential opportunity for liquidity or getting your return back from your investment. And it's very risky as well. I would tell you that you first have to be an accredited investor, and that's defined by a certain amount of income that you are able to demonstrate per year to make sure you're able to absorb that risk of being an angel investor. And I would tell you to conduct thorough research and do good due diligence to make sure that it's a good choice for you, because it's definitely a higher risk, but potentially it's also higher returns.
