Andy Moog
NHL Goaltender - 3 x Stanley Cup Champion
What change would I make in the NHL today? Well, that's pretty simple. From a goaltending perspective, I think it's easily the most underutilized and ridiculous rule that applies in the NHL today. And it's the trapezoid, it's the goaltender no touch zones in the corners of the rank below the goal line. It serves no purpose any longer. It doesn't curtail the goaltender's activities in terms of handling the puck the way they envisioned it. When Instituted this rule. What it's done is made goaltenders more athletic and more active in order to Corral pucks and stop pucks, before they get in the trapezoid so that they can play the puck up the ice. It just, it doesn't have a purpose, any longer. It's not a scenario where Defenders coming to retrieve parks are getting run into the end. Boards excessively. That doesn't occur any longer and I think that would be a simple easy rule. Well, to remove and let the goaltender's wander. Now, on the, on the negative side for goaltenders in those trapezoids that area, historically is where the goaltender's make their most turnovers mistakes, and it would create a great deal of opportunity for o fence if goaltenders were turning the puck over. Now I'm going to get letters from the goaltender's union for suggesting that, but in reality, it's an area where goalies make mistakes turn over pucks and create chaos and opportunity for the opposition. So, get rid of the trapezoid.
