I like to think about heart attack prevention based on two different factors. The things that you can change or modifiable risk factors and the things that you can't change or the non-modifiable risk factors. So I think we spend a lot of time focusing on the things that we can't change like our family history, our genetics, but what's more important is actually to be focusing on the things that we can change like how active are we, what are we eating, are we having, do we have a heart healthy diet, what does our cholesterol profile look like, is our blood pressure well managed. I think those are the things that are incredibly important to really change one's overall risk for cardiovascular disease. And the final thing I think that's important to focus on for prevention of a heart attack is actually being engaged with your healthcare provider. Many individuals don't even know that they're at risk for heart disease and are not often seeing a doctor.

2. Healthy diet: Pay attention to what you eat and strive for a heart-healthy diet. This includes consuming nutrient-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats while limiting processed foods, saturated fats, trans fats, and excessive sodium and sugar intake.

3. Managing risk factors: It's important to monitor and manage key risk factors like cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Regular check-ups with a healthcare provider can help identify any concerns early on and ensure proper management.

How do the hormonal changes of menopause affect heart health in women?

How Menopause Hormonal Changes Impact Women's Heart Health

Many people are aware of the symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes and night sweats, but most people are not aware that menopause represents a time of accelerating cardiovascular disease risk. Up until menopause, rates of heart disease in women lag significantly behind that of men, and that's thought to be due in part to the cardioprotective effects of estrogen. Estrogen helps to promote relaxation in our blood vessels, and it also promotes healthy lipid profiles with high levels of good cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and lower levels of bad cholesterol, LDL cholesterol. Now, after the menopause transition, we see that the prevalence and incidence of heart disease really starts to take off, and we still do not yet fully understand why this happens. The changes that occur during menopause certainly plays a role, but we found that in randomized trials, giving back estrogen did not solve the question. So more to come on this in the future.

But how do you figure out whether there really is a heart rhythm disorder going on? Well, one of the things that has been really helpful recently is the use of cardiac monitors. So if I have a patient who comes to me in the clinic and says that they've been having a number of symptoms including palpitations, I often will order a heart rhythm monitor for about two weeks. It allows me to see if I'm able to capture an abnormal heart rhythm.

Heart attacks can be caused by a number of different reasons, but the most common cause of heart attack in the United States is because of something called atherosclerosis, which is buildup of cholesterol plaque within the arteries that supply the heart called the coronary arteries. When somebody is having a heart attack, the most important thing that we need to do as physicians is to try to restore blood flow to their heart to ensure that there's adequate oxygen delivery to the heart muscle. And so one of the many treatments that, so the treatment is really focused on restoring blood flow and opening up that blockage. And there are many ways that we might be able to do that. You might have heard recently that we will bring patients to a procedure called cardiac catheterization, where we actually try to open up the blood vessel with balloons and stents. And sometimes if there are extensive blockages or very complicated blockages, patients may even need to undergo urgent cardiac artery bypass surgery to open up those blockages. Occasionally, heart attacks can be treated with medication alone, but it really does depend on the nature, the severity of the heart attack, and the overall clinical status of the patient.
