I'd say the most common thing that I see patients for is breast or nipple pain and most commonly this is related to latch. So it's just really important to go back and make sure that you're getting a good deep latch by your baby with a wide mouth. Clenched lips are ideal but not absolutely necessary. And if you're seeing that and you're still having persistent pain or damage to your nipple then it is important to see a lactation consultant or a breastfeeding medicine doc to make sure everything's okay. Production issues are another big one and there are definitely ways that we can evaluate you and help you to solve those problems and get more answers as well. Have a great day.

The Fourth Trimester: The Crucial Period for Maternal and Infant Health

We refer to the first three months postpartum as the fourth trimester. So this is a time when traditionally, at least in the United States, but in other countries as well, we tend to focus on the baby and we don't have enough built-in supports for mothers. Mothers are healing physically from a major event that their body just went through delivering a baby, whether vaginally or C-section. They are going through a lot of emotional changes, family changes, exhaustion, trying to figure out how to take care of their baby and what all of their baby's cries mean, and all of those things. And there is not traditionally frequent doctor appointments and other types of visits, such as home visits, that could better serve moms during this time. There's a very high rate of maternity morbidity and mortality and high rate of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. And if we had better built-in supports for moms during the fourth trimester, we would be able to cut down on that quite a bit and really take care of our moms when they need us the most.
