Are you ever scared of treating somebody? During my 36 years as an EMT, I don't know that I was ever scared of treating anyone because the first question that always is asked whenever you're doing an EMS scenario is, is the scene safe? And if the scene's not safe, then it's not someplace you should probably be going. You can always wait for law enforcement to come and make sure that scene is safe prior to making entry. So if you ever feel unsafe, get law enforcement involved immediately and even back away from the scene until the scene can be rendered safe. It's the best way to deal with things like that. So I've had knives pulled on me, things like that, but the police have always been most helpful in dealing with the issue.

I have never felt scared of treating someone as an EMT in my 36 years, as long as I make sure the scene is safe before entering. If I ever feel unsafe, I get law enforcement involved and wait for them to make it safe prior to entering the scene.

If you ever feel unsafe, it's important to involve law enforcement immediately and even step back from the scene until it's deemed safe. This is the best approach to handle such situations. While I have encountered instances where knives were pulled on me, the police have always been incredibly helpful in dealing with those issues.

Hi, I'm Doug, and I'm a retired firefighter, you can tell by the beard. I spent 27 years career and retiring as a company officer, and during that time also spent 36 years with volunteer and combination fire departments, rising to the rank of battalion chief of fire prevention with the combination department. During my career, I did a lot of HAZMAT, ran the HAZMAT team for a regional HAZMAT team, and ended up teaching for several schools throughout the United States, and I've traveled all over the place teaching HAZMAT. It's one of my passions. I've written curriculum for several colleges, I've written for a couple different states, Air National Guard, I kind of enjoy writing curriculum too. I've got my fingers in a lot of different things, and pretty much anything to do with the fire service, hazardous materials, I've been involved with quite a bit. Doug Rohn has been in emergency response since 1984, serving as a firefighter, code enforcement officer, training officer, apparatus engineer, and company officer. He has had an interest in hazardous materials response since he took his first hazmat class in 1991. He really enjoys instructing and curriculum development. He has created many specialized courses for the Technical College System, the Air National Guard, Wisconsin Emergency Management, and local fire departments.
