Why do you think long-distance running boomed in the 70s?

There was a running boom in the 1970s for a few reasons. First and foremost, great names. Like Bill Rogers and Frank Shorter really showcasing what great athleticism is. But also we are just seeing now 50th anniversaries of so many road races across the country. So running became and racing became more accessible to more people including women. Women were finally able to take part in distance running in the 70s. So for those three reasons, it was a boom.
