What eye infections can my dog spread to one another? So this is something I get very commonly when we diagnose an infection in the eye of a dog. Owners are concerned, will other dogs get this? Can it be spread from dog to human, human to dog? The simple answer is the risk is very low for this to happen. Most infections are bacterial infections with dogs. And these tend to occur more when there's an ulcer on the cornea and it gets a bacterial infection. And this can be very serious and requires very serious medical treatment, sometimes surgery. But the concern that this is going to spread to another dog, something like pink eye, which is a bacterial conjunctivitis in people, that is very rare to happen. So the risk of that tends to be very low. Humans also don't really need to be concerned that they are gonna get something from their dog's eye to them or that they gave their dog something. In cats, we will see this sometimes with certain viral infections, the most common one being feline herpes virus that can spread through an aerosolized, so something in the air, a virus that can affect one cat, can be spread to the other, and can cause conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, things like that. So a little bit more of a risk with cat eyes, not so much with dog eyes.
