What are some of the biggest lessons you can give other high school coaches when it comes to coaching high schoolers? There are a few things that come to mind or jump to mind immediately when I think about coaching the high school age group. Number one is that the process of coaching a high school athlete usually involves some formative experience for that boy or that girl. A lot of high school athletes are trying a sport for the first time and so as a coach you are the person that's introducing them to the concepts, the culture, and everything that surrounds that sport and that's always good to keep in mind. The second thing related to that is that the high school years I always look at as the first four years of a nine-year arc. If an athlete is going to compete in high school and college, the high school years are a preparatory phase for anything that follows and so it's always good to have a long-term view in terms of the training and the development of that athlete. I guess the final thing with high school athletes is kind of a split factor is that these are people first and events second. So you're always coaching the human and that might be in the 800 or the 1600 or the 400 and the final thing related to that is that every high school athlete is always someone's kid so you have to remember it's a child and that person has two parents they go home to every day.
