How often do you recommend brushing senior dogs teeth? What toothpaste do you recommend? So ideally, the hope is that you're actually starting to brush their teeth before they become seniors because once that dental tartar and plaque build up on the teeth, tooth brushing is not gonna be super effective. These dogs probably need a dental cleaning under anesthesia with dental x-rays to determine which teeth need to be removed. Now, if you have been brushing prior to that point, ideally daily brushing is recommended, just like in people. And usually we want to use a dog-specific toothpaste. So some of the toothpaste can have artificial sweeteners like Xylitol, which are toxic. So use a dog-specific toothpaste. Lots of them can be flavored so that they like it with chicken or beef, for instance, and are available at most pet stores.
