How much free time will I have in the military? So speaking from the army standpoint on active duty, it depends on kind of what's going on. So let's say a typical MOS that maybe doesn't have crazy schedules like MPs and cooks and those kind of individuals. If it's like Monday through Friday, you're not in the field, you're not on deployment, then you're typically doing 630 PT until 730, so doing physical fitness during those time frames. Between 730 and nine, you have an opportunity to go get breakfast and shower and everything. And then you're working from like nine o'clock until 435, somewhere around there on average. And then when you're off at five o'clock or 430, then you have your free time to do whatever you need to do in the evenings, whether that's, you know, going and hang out with friends, watching movies, whatever, until you have to be back for physical fitness the next day. You have the weekends off, you have holidays off, so you have that time to be free, right? And then if you're in the field, well, there's probably not a whole lot of free time. Maybe a little bit of time in the evenings, kind of sort of in like your field environment, but nothing crazy where you can go like catch a movie or anything like that, so it's a little bit restricted there. Also on deployments, if it's a combat deployment, very little free time in most environments. In some environments, you might have like some hours here and there, you can do some different things, and then it kind of depends. But if it's maybe a training deployment, then you might still have a kind of similar situation as if you're stateside in your regular unit, you might have some free time in the evenings to maybe check out local sites, to do some things with your friends on base and everything, because it's a little bit more relaxed. So those are kind of some examples of when you might be able to get some free time, at least for active duty army anyways.

How much free time are you gonna have in the military? Well, I can only speak for myself. I was with the Canadian forces, and so if you're in the US or somewhere else, adjust accordingly. Free time is relative to the current role or the current thing that you're facilitating within your space, within your MOS. So if you're going through a training cycle, if you're just starting and you're going through basic training or you're going through your trade qualifications, you're probably not gonna have a lot of free time because a lot of your time and energy is gonna be spent into passing and exceeding and excelling at those tasks and at that training. If you're gonna go out on FTX, you're there 24-7. When you get back and you're in garrison, you're gonna be cleaning your kit and getting ready for the next one. It's when you get back to your regiment, when you actually get posted, when you actually get your day-to-day job and you're doing that, it functions just like a nine-to-five almost anywhere else. And you get to work a standard day, get up, go to work, come home and live your life.

All right, the quick answer to this is it depends. Well, for one, it's going to depend on what job you have in the military, what you're getting ready to do with your unit if you're deploying soon, and what readiness checklist they have to fill. As an infantry Marine, my free time was very limited. Let's say we're out in the field Monday through Thursday. You have zero free time. You can't just go do whatever. Weekends were pretty much free. Every once in a while you might have a Saturday operation or you get back late Friday night, early Saturday morning, and you have to do stuff on Saturday. But if we were not in the field, we were either going to classes or doing weapons maintenance or doing hip pocket classes up at the O-course or whatnot. So you did have a little bit of free time. We mainly just see who could run the fastest back to their barracks and play Call of Duty until about lunchtime, and then we'd have to go to a class or something. But it really depends on what you're doing and where you're going.

So how much free time are you going to have in the military? Honestly, it depends. When you're first starting out, you're going through training, none. You're there to learn, you're there to train, and that's exactly what you need to be focused on. But once you actually get into it and you're in the day-to-day routine, you're actually going to have a lot of free time. For most people in the military, it's just a regular job. You're going to have weekends off, you're going to have your evenings and holidays and all that to do all the things that you normally would. Now, when you deploy, that's going to be different, and you're probably not going to have a lot of free time. But again, that's okay because there's not really a lot of stuff to do when you're deployed. But your just normal day-to-day life, it's not as all life-consuming as a lot of people like to think that it is.

How much free time will I have in the military? Initially? Not a lot basic training literally consumes your entire day from the time that you wake up to the time you go to bed. But it goes by fast. The next phase of training you go to after you graduate from BMT is where you learn how to do the job that you chose with your recruiter before you join the military. That's more typical of your 9 to 5. But the evenings are dedicated to studying the material in order to pass your practical examinations and your written test. And it really is specific on the career field that you chose after you graduate from that phase of training and you report to your first duty location. That is more typical of that quintessential 9 to 5, you have your evenings off or you have that time off after work to do whatever you want to do. And you have your weekends off too or you have two days off. It's pretty subjective as far as what you think normal would be, but it starts to become normal in that military life. But there is plenty of free time to be had, it just takes time to get there. But once you're at that point in your career, it's just like any other job and you have the free time it comes down to time management at that point, but there's free time to be had.
