How long does my dog need to be in isolation for kennel cough? So kennel cough is also called infectious tracheobronchitis. It's basically made up of a complex of a lot of different bacteria and viruses that can be infectious dog-to-dog and cause coughing. Now the infectious period for kennel cough often unfortunately starts before they're actually symptomatic. However, once you know your dog has kennel cough or suspected of having kennel cough, it's important to keep them away from other dogs for about 10 to 14 days. And if they are still showing symptoms, you may want to even do so for longer, but definitely consult your veterinarian. But generally, rule of thumb, 10 to 14 days.
