How long did I talk about retiring before I actually did it? It was two years actually. So my goal was to retire after 2012. That would have given me four Olympic Games, which would have been the most for a high hurdler. Unfortunately, I got injured a month before the US trials and just wasn't able to recover in time. And so anyway, I went on to compete in 2013 and it really wasn't quite the same. And then I decided at that point I would give indoors of 2014 a try and decided at that point that that would be it. So I did run, actually won the Mule Rose Games in 2014 and then went on to the US Championships. I got third by I think six one thousandths of a second, finished with a bronze medal. And so that was my very last race. My very last race ended with me getting a medal. And so I said, you know, the irony behind that. So I started my career getting a medal in 2000 and ended my career getting a medal in 2014. So that's how it went. That's the long and the short of it.

1996 was my first Olympic trials, and Tom Jagger was the seasoned veteran and a guy that I looked up to. And after just missing the Olympic team, I remember in the press conference after the event, Tom saying, when asked about his retirement, he said when, you know, you know, And so I always remembered that and always appreciated how long my career had lasted that I never expected it to last that long and by the end 2008 for me I knew that it was time. the Olympics operates in a quadrennial and so if you're close to an Olympic year that's typically the time to check out if you're at a national level and yeah, I was 34 years old, it took it a lot further than I ever thought I would. And by the end, I knew that I had a chance, but I knew that if I didn't make that team in 2008, it was time to hang up suit. when, you know, you know,

How long did you talk about retiring before you actually did it? I didn't talk about it very much at all before I did it because I wanted to just be focused on competing while I was still competing and not being focused on retirement, but I knew that I wanted to retire. I decided four years prior to my retirement that I was going to retire after the 2000 Olympics, I decided that in 1996. But I also had decided when I first started my professional and Olympic career-- 11 years prior to my retirement, I decided that I'm going to go out on top, and I figured I could probably do a good 11, 12 years maybe before it's time to move on. And I decided then, regardless of whether I'm still winning or whether I'm still ranked number one in the world or not, I am going to retire on top. And when I feel like I no longer can sustain this level of commitment and dedication to what I'm doing, I'm going to leave the sport. And so I was still ranked number one in the world in my events when I retired, but I felt like it was time for me to move on. I was very fortunate to have achieved all of my goals, which is what motivated me, and I felt like, OK, well, if I have no more goals to motivate me, then I'm going to be unmotivated, and I'm probably going to lose. So it's time for me to bow out, and that's what made my decision.

How long did I talked about retiring before? I actually did it? Well, I retired and numerous times. Well, maybe not retired. Certainly after 2004, and my second Olympics, I was always going to take some time away and to be honest, just was completely lost. I think I was about 27 years of age. I'd spent the majority of my life, you know, on one particular Pursuit, and when that was no longer, I really struggle with that process. So, invariably started to prepare For 2018 Olympic games which unfortunately I didn't make, but I had time off after 2001. There was some personal things that I deal with again in after 2004. And to be honest, if I had the financial means to go again as a 31-year old. I would have done it, not because I had things on accomplished but because I really hadn't prepared myself for life after swimming.

How long did I talk about retiring until I actually did? Well, if you ask my wife, Laura it was probably every couple of months for most of my career. It was always fairly brutal. I got pretty tired or injured or overtrained and I always follow retiring. But for me, it really came down to doing One race in 2016. After 27 years of racing professionally, where I got, I did the swim and got on the start of the bike and I just didn't have it. I was like the buckets empty and I rode to the hotel called Laura and said, I'm retired. Called the race director and said, okay, I'm done and I apologize. And that was it. It was a real Forrest Gump. Moment where I had done everything I wanted to do in the sport. The bucket of energy was empty. My passion was done. I mean I still love the sport, but I knew it was time. I was 44 and the results weren't quite coming. So it was an easy decision in the end. Cheers.

Before I retired, I actually didn't talk a lot about when I was going to retire how it was going to retire. What this what decisions were going to go into that decision? What factors were going to go into that decision in 1995? Going into the Iron Man that year? I knew that that would be my final Iron Man. And I also knew that the following year I was, I was going to do some races that We're fun for me to do but that had nothing to do with anything that I was necessarily really good at. I did a bunch of short races that final year. In 1996, the decision was clear though. I knew that I was still at the top of my game that I was still really strong and fit by also had the feeling like if I keep going I'm going to pay a price that maybe I'll never get back the rest of my life. I might get injured I might get burned out, I might just be completely turned off on sport of Athletics fitness health, everything you do. With what my lifestyle had been all about for many years and I thought, you know, I feel good. I feel strong. I don't think I can bring any more into the sport. I don't think I can get any better. So let's just put it all on the line this year and call it a day. That's what I did.
