Globally, our scope in chiropractic is extended or expanded to include any type of musculoskeletal condition. So musculoskeletal really means any event or adverse event that affects the muscles, the articular structures, ligaments and tendons. And that would include things like muscle tears, muscle strains, ligamentous sprains, so ankle sprains, anything which is non-surgical, so a grade 1 or 2 muscle strain that doesn't actually ligament sprain such as ACL injury or MCL injury which doesn't necessarily require surgery in conjunction with an orthopedic surgeon. And then anything non-specific such as non-specific low back pain, neck pain and even headaches. So there's a very broad scope of conditions which can be treated by chiropractic care.

Hey, it's Dr. Lisa Goodman. What types of injuries can be treated with chiropractic care? I specialize in pediatric chiropractic. That's something that surprises a lot of people. We're talking about low back, neck headaches. Those are sort of the obvious things. But in my practice, I see so many sports injuries in kids that, listen, I see a lot of adults and they're like, hey, when I was in middle or high school, I had a shoulder injury that never got treated or I had a back injury that never got treated. They suffer with that into adulthood to this day, into their 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond. I'm treating those kids that have that shoulder or back injury whose parents or coaches may be kind of telling them to shake it off. They'll be OK. They'll get better. Kids bounce back. It's not always true. Kids have injuries. They don't exaggerate them. So we're talking about ankle sprains, shoulder pain, overuse, and trauma, elbow pain with overuse, wrist, knee, hip, you name it. Kids do get better, but they do need intervention and treatment. So pretty much any sports injury, if the bone's not sticking out of the skin and the injury's not bleeding, it's a candidate for chiropractic care. By a certified sports chiropractor or a pediatric sports chiropractor, those are things you want to look for. And we can help kids and adults with all these types of injuries.

What's up everyone, Dr. Sean here. My next question reads, what types of injuries can be treated with chiropractic care? The list would be very very lengthy. What I will say is chiropractors have been traditionally known to treat back pain or even musculoskeletal disorders. Nowadays, when I went to school, even though I'm in chiropractic school, we still learn a lot about physiotherapy and we even take a board exam on physiotherapy. And I have a lot of friends who are physical therapists that end up learning about joint mobilization. So I'd say they're not exactly synonymous between chiropractic and physical therapists, but the injuries that we treat are going to overlap quite a bit. What I would say is what we don't treat is kind of easier to understand. We're not going to be treating cancers, we're not going to be treating fractures, we're not going to be doing obstetrics or giving any sort of drugs. We can assist with quality of life and helping with pain level management, but traditionally the injuries that we're going to be treating are more musculoskeletal based. And then for myself, I did a lot of postgraduate training in neurology, specifically for like vision and concussion and TBI. So it's also going to depend on the level of training that your chiropractor has after he or she went to school. And it's also going to depend on state boards to say like, hey, we're the right stop first or we need to get you to a different doctor first. So instead of making this exhaustive list of all the injuries, what I'll just say in general is musculoskeletal injuries and then depending on the person you see, it could be a little bit more than that.

What types of injuries can be treated with chiropractic care? So I think most often people are thinking just of the spine, the neck, the mid-back, the low-back as far as seeing a chiropractor. But really if you're seeing a sports chiropractor, you can be treated for all kinds of injuries. What's really important for people to remember is that even if you're, let's say your knee hurts, we're always going to look at what's up and downstream from that area. So we're going to look at your hip, we're going to look at your low back, we're going to look at your ankle and your foot and see how all those things are working together potentially to be causing you knee pain. And so keeping that in mind, we can see that really any injury can be treated with chiropractic care that is musculoskeletal. In my clinic I really focus on shoulder injuries, neck and upper back pain, and then I see a lot of pregnancy and postpartum patients. So with that we're dealing with the gamut of complaints and injuries from foot pain to hip pain, low back, pelvic pain, pubic bone pain, really anything is game. So I always like to recommend seeing your sports chiropractor as a first line of defense. You can get in, get a musculoskeletal evaluation, and then if they need to refer you on either for imaging or to some other kind of physician, we can always do that too. So it's a good kind of gatekeeper to whatever kind of treatment you might need.
